Attainability of art.

Attainability of art.

Visual message: Meaning vs Emotional Response.

Visual communication can both carry a literal, historic or emotional message. One of the most often discussed concepts in arts is Allegory - it presumes the existence of a level of meaning beyond that which is readily apparent. Rather than you see what you get, you get much more than what you at first see. Historicists were fundamentally allegorists endeavoring to create timeless works of art by illustrating literary and genre subjects . Several objects of everyday life great grew to carry a publicly accepted meaning, and stand as a symbol for something. For instance apple illustrates a forbidden fruit in the Bible, lamb often portraits Christ, and so forth. And artists, often attempt to assign meaning to the objects they combine in their photographs. A fist can represent rage, a fence can mean obstacle, high heels can mean “sexy” and so on. So using objects that have common association with one or other concept in real life helps to visually convey the message as much. Another artistic movement that, even though combines the elements of using meaningful props, however, heavily relies of use of texture, color and composition is Modernism and Impressionism. Impressionists were realists, who painted the transitory moments of lived experience.

That begs a question. Which is more appropriate in nude photography?  Allegory or Impressionism? Is there one form of portraying a nude in nude photos that is most befitting?  Can there be one way of presenting a nude that will unite critics in their opinion?  Is nude best used in portrayal or such sociatal concepts as Power or Justice, that are representative of humanity and are probably best represented by a human nude form.

Or should it be used to create an intangible feeling romance?  That which is obivious and natural.  Or should the nude be simply used as the artists intends? It’s nothing more than a message, a visual communication of artist’s ideas and feelings, and should always be accepted as is and judged on individual basis by the viewers?  So wich is?  To each is own, or a Universal Nude, so to say.

In some strange manner photography in general is often not perceived handmande to the same degree as “handmande” is persupposed in painting, drawing, or sculpture.

In painting an artist relies on his ability to apply by hand paints in such manner that best represents his vision.

While in photography, an artist analyses and uses the light, selects the composition, film type, focus, depth of field and later processing techniques to assign a specific emotion to an image.

And just as with painting or sculptures or drawing, one unfamiliar with the medium may create a fabulous piece, he or she may not be able to produce consisent results as they require knowledge and experience.  Conceptualization, knowing the rules and the tools, all requires practice and then a personal style is born.  And then recognized.  It is fascinating to see how different photographers given the same camera and same set of photographic subjects, surroundings and conditions, will produce different results, just as two painters trying to paint the same subject will not produce an identical image.  Interestingly enough, in people photography facial expressions become as much of the artist’s signature, as choice of lighting and composition.

In photography “it is not the camera flash that produces many reproductios of reality and allows the photographer to reflect and represent himself.”

Image balance and Compositional balance.

Rules of composition is an often used term in the world of photography. Rules of composition are often consulted by photographers in their attempt to bring balance to an image. While when photographing people, it is not only a compositional balance that is important in a photo, even though more time will be spent later on rules of composition in nude photography, emotional balance is equally important when working with nudes.

This nude photo is from a series of photographs done by the window in summer of 2006. While this is one of 3 or 4 similar images, a striking difference sets this photograph apart from the rest. The difference is in the emotional balance this nude photo radiates. Even as a static shot, this image is full of energy, and is a great example of well balanced opposites tied together in harmony. And here are a few words from photographers reacting to this nude:

“There is a silent smile. The hands are in a twilight position. It tells stories.”

“The dark around the upper half of her body is magnificent. She nearly is a breakable abstract”

The reserved feeling of this nude photo is offset by the silent smile, the statue-like still pose is offset by the loosely hanging strap of the dress, the body language of crossed hands shows reservation and is in conflict with the exposed breasts, the smooth skin is an opposite to the rough texture of brick wall and the bright light coming from the window is the opposite to the dark shadows surrounding the figure.  The black square of the image is cut with a curve of light coming from the window and continuing through the model’s body and dress. None of the elements are dominant and together created a remarkable image that can have endless interpretations.  Emotional content of this nude photo is incredible strong, and more than one story go along with it.

Nude photography and what it is about. It is interesting to talk about nude photography. And what makes it different from other types of photography, and about the message that it carries. It is an interesting subject, because with other types of photography, a poorly executed photo is typically perceived as a poorly executed photo, while with nude photography, a poorly executed photo would typically be perceived as offensive. Or may be labled pornographic and then the offensive nature of such photo becomes a matter of opinion and discussion. While other either poorly executed photos or intentionally disturbing photos may cause a discussion or debate, nude photos have their own adult category. Yet, when looking back through the surviving art of past centuries, we find it that the main subject of many art pieces is a nude or partially nude human body! So then, one might become confused as to where the dividing line is? What makes a painting of a nude body widely celebrated and causes another nude photo to be publicly condemned? Is it possible that painting a nude figure was as controversial in the old days and photographing a nude today? Is there a criteria, a set of rules that makes one nude photograph celebrated and the other disdained? Is it in composition? Or colors? Or is it timing and relevance? Catching something ethereal that reflects the world of today in an unspoken language? Or is it the world of today only or something more? Something innate, something basic? It is also interesting to notice that female form often dominates nude art. So what is nude photography about? Where is the art in nude photos? What is it about nude form that makes it so controversial? So admirable and yet so often R-rated. Is it possible that adult photography of today will become the masterpieces of the future? Or is it a certain impossibility? Is our judgment of art nude photos today solely dependent on the the art nude look established by the past?

Enigma - Look Of Today Lyrics

Come in and see the newest things
Feel what just money can bring
Don’t you know, that’s the load of today

You have a problem, I can help
Buy it and be yourself
Cos you know, that’s the look of today

So many trends just fade away
Before you can wear it, it’s a pass©
But you know, that’s the look of today

You are so stylish, you are so vain
Sometimes I think you have no brain
But you know, that’s the look of today
